GLOBAL STORY

The invisible wounds of trauma know no borders. While Invisible Injuries is told through Australian stories, its message resonates around the world.

According to the World Health Organization, around 70% of people globally will experience a potentially traumatic event during their lifetime, and an estimated 3.9% of the world's population will experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives. The risk is significantly higher for people exposed to war and violent conflict.

For veterans, the journey home can present challenges that continue long after military service has ended. Invisible Injuries brings together voices from Australia and the Netherlands to highlight that while every experience is unique, the need for understanding, compassion and connection is universal.

We hope this film contributes to a global conversation, one that honours service, reduces stigma, and reminds us that healing begins when people feel seen, heard and supported.

ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY

Invisible Injuries is a feature-length Australian documentary, directed by Kelly Bergsma from Double Shot Creative Studios, that explores the enduring impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the often unseen realities faced by veterans as they transition from military service back into civilian life.

Following Australian veteran Andy Fermo, the documentary weaves together the voices of veterans, families, psychologists and senior military leaders from Australia and overseas to reveal the human stories behind the statistics. Through honest conversations and intimate moments, the film explores trauma, resilience, identity and hope, while highlighting the lasting impact that invisible injuries can have on individuals, families and communities.

Invisible Injuries is ultimately a story about understanding. It invites audiences to look beyond the uniform and discover the strength, courage and humanity of those navigating life after service.
